The annual Royal Easter Show Wine Awards is the country's oldest wine competition, celebrating its 64th Anniversary in 2017. It is also still one of the most prestigious, awarding the highest level of achievement in New Zealand winemaking, reflecting the huge advances in quality and style in New Zealand wine.
This year the team at Mud House were delighted to receive a gold medal each for the Rapaura Sauvignon Blanc and The Narrows Pinot Noir - stars of the newly released Sub Region Series wine range.
2016 RAPAURA SAUVIGNON BLANC Hailing from the eastern end of Rapaura Road, where bony braided river soils meet the more alluvial and younger silts, the Rapaura Sauvignon Blanc encaptures a pungent and lifted flavour profile, which we have found over the years of using fruit from this area, is atypical of that sub region. NOSE Powerful grapefruit and passionfruit pith with scented bell pepper. PALATE Full complext and a long quenching finish. FOOD MATCH New season asparagus with lemon infused balsamic.
2015 THE NARROWS PINOT NOIR Further up the other end of the Wairau Valley, where the land converges with the river to form what's locally known as The Narrows, our Pinot Noir grows beautifully in the cooler aspects of that locale; delivering minerally acidity and tannins with tension. NOSE Blueberry and red cherries. PALATE Fragrant blueberry and cherries deftly sit on a palate of sophisticated elegant tannins and focused acidity. FOOD MATCH Grilled venison loin with smoky roasted beets and truffled potatoes.
The Sub Region Series was launch at our home, New Zealand, in November 2016. Look out for it at selected supermarkets and fine wine retailers throughout the country.
