Sailing Sauvignon Blanc Vintage

The annual delivery of Marlborough’s mighty drop of Sauvignon Blanc to nearby Wellington is happening today.
The Savour Wineworks Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Yacht Race, which first took place on September 11, 2001, was won by Mud House in 2006, carried by Alistair Turnbull, aboard Global.
Today will a first for Mud House winemaker Nadine Worley, and it’s a trip she’s looking forward to alongside work mate Chrissy Powlesland, Brand Manager for Mud House.
The yacht, which they also used last year, Midnight, will be skippered by Chris Webb, Vice-Commodore of the Club and owner of the Picton Pharmacy.
“When I was a kid we had a shack on Lake Alexandrina in South Australia, and I used to sail a little Minnow dingy (like an optimist) which is the extent of my sailing experience. It’s not quite the same as sailing a yacht across the Cook Strait!” said Nadine. Today is a great opportunity for Marlborough’s wine community to come together and celebrate. “And there’s a bit of competition too,” said Nadine with a grin.
The first release of the year always creates excitement and pride, as well as a few nerves of anticipation. The Mud House 2015 Sauvignon Blanc boasts a fresh new white label, adding to the special occasion.
“It’s exciting but also a little nerving; our Sauvignon Blanc is such a big part of what we do. It’s great to see the hard work our growers, viticulture team and winery guys come together. I love how no vintage is ever the same!”
Nadine said at the moment this year’s Sauvignon Blanc is showing some nice focused nettle characters and beautiful grapefruit on the palate, and has the balance it needs. “It is very pure and focussed. It still has the abundance of fruit flavours but in a very elegant way.” “It is a very bare bones variety,” said Nadine. “You don’t have a lot of winemaking influences you have in the other varieties, so all the components, (the fruit flavours, the acid, the sugar, the phenolics) have to be in harmony.” Nadine’s favourite food match for Sauvignon Blanc is crab and broad bean salad, which she shared with good family and friends on her wedding day.
End.
