Cath Oates
Group Winemaker
Cath was born and bred in Margaret River, West Australia. Growing up surrounded by vineyards, including the family property, it was no surprise that Cath decided to pursue a career in viticulture and winemaking. Cath completed her Bachelor of Business, Viticulture, at Curtin University, Perth and then went on to a complete a Post Graduate Degree in Oenology at the University of Adelaide, Roseworthy.
Cath spent time working for various wineries in Margaret River and has enjoyed flying winemaker roles in Italy - Trentino in 2000, Sicily in 2004 - and the USA in 2005. Lured by new opportunities, Cath moved to Marlborough in 2006 and hasn't looked back.
Appointed Mud House Group Winemaker in 2010, Cath is a Senior Judge at the New Zealand International Wine Show, Royal Easter Show and New World Wine Show and is an Advisory Group Member for Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.
Cath is responsible for the quality and direction of the wines at Mud House. She spends a lot of time comparing wines, judging at shows and organising tastings to help her explore new tastes and techniques. She enjoys working closely with Viticulturist Stephen Dempster to produce beautiful regional and varietal fruit. Cath loves being in the market and sharing Mud House wines with wine lovers from around the world.
